If there was a school for VCs - these subjects should be compulsory:

Most people ‘fall into’ a career in venture capital. As a result, they might lack the necessary skills to do right by founders and their LPs.

8 Subjects that should be Compulsory in ‘VC’ School:
(Hint: It’s not just all about finance)

1. Empathy (How not to be an a**hole)
- How to be kind to founders, partners and employees
- Understanding people, dynamics and culture
- How to empower others to succeed

2. Active Listening
- Putting aside pre-conceived notions and listening without judgment
- Perceiving intended meaning, not just hearing words spoken
- Gathering necessary information genuinely and earnestly

3. Thinking with First Principles
- Curiosity and courage to question the status quo
- Never apply “proven models” blindly
- Encourage and create room for constructive dissent

4. Developing Loosely Held Conviction
- Maintain strong conviction in theses whilst leave room for doubt
- Flexibility to adapt based on narratives and trends (not hype)
- Balancing risk between innovation and proven models

5. Innovation As A Mindset
- Embracing mistakes as a necessary step towards discovery
- Look beyond the obvious and seek deals in the most unlikely places
- Pioneer new ways of investing (i.e.beyond capital what can we offer?)

6. Storytelling and Persuasion
- Enrolling founders, investors, and partners
- Co-creating powerful narratives
- Making win-win deals against all odds

7. Courage and Ethics
- Humility to admit mistakes and the courage to call out injustice
- Balancing profit with social responsibility
- Building the foundations for diversity and inclusion

8. Ecosystem Building
- Attracting like minded folks
- Effectively working with others to grow startup ecosystem
- Paying attention to what Founders need and meeting it

Some of these are skills,
Some of these are paradigm shifts.
I personally believe both are important to be great in this field.

What else did I miss?
