"Communication in remote teams sucks."

But is that really the case? I don't think so.

I’m Usman and I run numerous fully remote companies. My holding company is www.hov.co.

"Communication in remote teams sucks."

I hear this retort from the return-to-office crew daily.

But the reality is far different than the myths holding them back.

Myth #1: Remote workers slack off.
Reality: Remote workers are often more productive with fewer distractions. Trust paired with clear deliverables prevents slacking.

Myth #2: Big decisions can't be made remotely.
Reality: The right tools allow remote teams to make huge calls. Meticulous documentation and proactive communication enable it.

Myth #3: Remote work kills company culture.
Reality: Thoughtful virtual events and spaces build connections and culture. Invest time in relationships.

Myth #4: Confusion is inevitable in remote teams.
Reality: Strong norms and etiquette bring clarity. Overcommunication trumps undercommunication.

Myth #5: Remote onboarding is impossible.
Reality: Comprehensive virtual onboarding plus remote buddies ensure new hires thrive.

The bottom line?

The remote work horror stories are mostly fiction. With intention, remote teams can be cohesive, accountable, and productive.

The myths are excuses to continue holding onto the status quo.

Revisiting these outdated notions and working with your teams to overcome them will result in the building of a substantial advantage.
