Tesla's Futuristic Supercharger Site is Actually an Old-School Diner!
Elon Musk’s “drive-in theatre” vision comes into reality.
• Tesla breaks ground on LA charging site pairing Superchargers with a 1950s diner and drive-in movies.
• The ambitious concept aims to turn pitstops into enticing destinations.
• Tesla can leverage its network to pioneer EV charging amenities.
From Blueprint to Reality
Tesla has begun constructing its long-simmering ambitious refresh of the humble EV charging stop – with a glitzy Los Angeles development kicking Elon Musk’s “drive-in theatre” vision into reality.
The company has broken ground on a site bundling 28 Superchargers with a 1950s-inspired diner and twin outdoor movie screens. In theory, it allows Tesla owners to plug in, grab a bite, and take in films timed to finish when vehicles are fully recharged.
Tesla Initiates Construction on Hollywood Supercharger
Musk first floated the idea back in 2018 to reimagine boring refuelling points for the electric era. After years of silence, Tesla filed permits last September to overhaul a Hollywood property into a concept fusing The Jetsons with Grease.
As legacy gas stations fade over the coming decades, such theatrical charging playgrounds may help ease driver range anxiety. Tesla’s industry-leading proprietary network enables unique customer amenities to turn pitstops into destinations.
Revolutionizing Charging
It also underscores Tesla’s charging advantage over rivals in making EVs viable for long trips. Advocates say unreliable and fragmented public infrastructure keeps adoption frustratingly low.
So, while Musk’s LA showcase caters specifically to his luxury clientele, its pizzazz pushes boundaries for making charging cool.
If such activations spread to middle America, offering respite for road trippers of all bank accounts, it will help anchor the EV mobility dreams on which Tesla was founded.
